A vida portuguesa, Lisboa, Norte
Região Norte is the most northern of the five continental regions of Portugal. Best known for the famous Douro valley and its world-renowned product, the port wine. Though the vine-covered hills left and right the river surely are the main tourist attraction, Norte has to offer much more. Judging by the book, it’s the region José Saramago probably discovered most extensively as he was fascinated by its multifaceted history, the fast-changing landscape and the diversity in cultural heritage. Many of the towns and villages remain relatively unknown outside Portugal. Nevertheless, they are highly rewarding travel destinations, rich in historical structure and value.
Norte also offers Portugal’s second – and last – metropolis to Lisbon. Porto has developed from a mere industrial center to a highly-frequented tourist spot. Unlike other examples of fast growing must-see cities, Porto has kept its unique charisma, so far. For us, Norte is a fascinating region because of its diverse nature and the devotion of its people to a remarkable piece of land.
